On 23 Jun 2016 the UK held a referendum to decide whether to remain or leave the EU. The result announced on 24 Jun was that the UK had voted by a majority of 51.9% to 48.1% to leave the EU. The turnout was 72.2% (electorate 46,555,001), which means that 37.44% of the electorate had voted to leave the EU. The Prime Minister, David Cameron immediately announced his resignation.
On 29th March 2017, the UK government, under Prime Minister Theresa May, triggered article 50 to ensure that the United Kingdom would leave the European Union on 29th March 2019.
